There are numerous confirmed events, ranging from celebrations along the many rivers of Dominica (the Nature Island) in the Caribbean - to numerous festivities in Australia, with the support of the International River Foundation based in Brisbane, our co-lead. And from the “7 Rivers Festival” in West Java, Indonesia - to the Mini River Carnival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - to Bangladesh where there will be both a major conference on the negative impacts of river pollution at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute along with other events organized by the Riverine People, Waterkeepers Bangladesh and the National River Conservation Commission. – And from numerous planned events across the United States as part of the 50th anniversary of their Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (a sampling of activities there include the Feather River Festival in California, an educational float trip down the Rio Grande hosted by the Big Bend Conservancy, the Gila River Festival in New Mexico, the inaugural River Market in Portland, Oregon organized by the Freshwater Trust, and the Visions of the Wild Festival in Vallejo California). – While In Canada, there will be the always huge BC Rivers Day across the Province of British Columbia (organized in concert with the Outdoor Recreation Council with events such as the great Burnaby Village Museum celebration along Deer Lake Brook, the annual massive cleanup of the Chilliwack-Vedder Rivers, a number of awareness and educational activities organized by BC Hydro, the New Westminster Riverfest event organized by the Fraser River Discovery Center, the Fall Festival at Haig Brown House in Campbell River, the Ridge Meadows Rivers Day event as well as the Kanaka Creek celebration in Maple Ridge, the “Take a Dip” against water pollution program in Surrey, a special showing of the award winning film, RiverBlue, in North Vancouver, while a flotilla of canoes, kayaks and rafts will ply the Fraser from Hope to Agassiz. - And from activities along the great rivers of Europe - to a host of festivities in England and Wales such as the Angling Trust’s “get fishing campaign” and the planned clean-up of the River Freshney in Grimsby. – While in Africa, the Foundation for the Conservation of Nigerian Rivers and the Ethiope Trust Foundation will formally launch an advocacy campaign for the rights of rivers in Nigeria. – These are to name just a few of many. Celebrations, events and festivities spanning six continents are in the planning stages and we’ll profile many of these in future updates.

It was a great success, with millions of people involved from more than 70 countries. Activities ranged from stream clean-ups and habitat enhancement projects to educational outings and community riverside celebrations. This year’s global event will be even bigger! World Rivers Day is based on the incredible success of BC Rivers Day in British Columbia, Canada, which has been underway since 1980.
